Sapphires
Sapphire has been set into Greek and Byzantine ecclesiastical goldwork for centuries, and its deep blue remains one of the few colours that can hold its own against a heavily granulated gold surface. The Damaskos workshop sets it by hand in gold in Athens.
Each stone is chosen for evenness of colour and depth rather than scale. Settings keep the sapphire close to the metal, framed by twisted wire and granulation drawn directly from Byzantine precedent.
