Cameo

Cameo carving is one of the oldest decorative techniques in Greek jewelry — a figure cut in relief so that it stands against a ground of contrasting colour, a craft the Hellenistic world refined and Byzantium inherited.

The Damaskos workshop mounts cameos in gold, framing each carving with granulation and twisted wire drawn from the same Byzantine vocabulary used throughout the collection. Because each cameo is cut by hand, every piece differs in detail.
